August 3, 2009 Quick tip for monitoring network activity
The other day I was a bit pissed off because network manager would not show network statistics. You know, inbound/outbound traffic, speeds, that kind of thing.
Well, on the Resources tab on System Monitor (accessible on System->Admnistration) you have that info. Probably you could have more info there, but for me it’s perfect, just what I was looking for.

If you’d like to work with the data (current) about network activity, parse the /proc/net/dev file at required intervals and/or interface – This wouldn’t require elevated permissions

Good tip! Last time I tried to process that info in a program i was working on, I was calling iwconfig (or similar) at regular intervals and see what it said. When you’re dumb, you’re dumb lol
