July 22, 2008 It’s just when you’re about to…
… show linux to your sister that nautilus decides it’s not going to work.
“Oh, it’s so pretty! that cube is insane!”
And then I plug a usb external hard drive and guess what? Instead of mounting, it’s give me an error. What’s the problem? It can’t automount the hard drive because it’s in NTFS.
There are bugs, then there’s this, and there’s a sister that’s not going to try out free software because “it’s shit and nothing works!!!”
Damn.

Ouch — that’s a bad bit of luck when you’re trying to introduce someone to Linux – I haven’t a faint hope of converting my wife or daughter – they’re both locked into some Windows applications and games. On the other hand, they’ve both had some minor and major disasters with Windows, and both still believe in ‘safe’ sites; i.e., download something and don’t scan it.
I’m also keeping a blog on my adventures with Ubuntu Linux. So far, I’ve had a couple of annoyances. I had to download, via apt-get install, a driver for my graphics card, and I had to manually delete some entries in my Wine folder after uninstalling some programs. Other than that, I’m quite happy with Linux.
Have you played with any other distros?

Ouch!! I had enough trouble converting my wife to Firefox on Windows.
You could try Firefox or Open Office on her. Even on Windows, they’re both free and good quality – especially Open Office, as compared to Microsoft Office. I installed Open Office for my mother-in-law, as she didn’t want to shell out the money for MS Office.
I’ve bookmarked your blog – it’s good to see the problems and learning curve other people are going through.
